Moving Checklist: Everything You Need Before Unpacking Day
Moving day gets all the attention, but unpacking day is when your new house actually starts to feel like home. The more you prepare before the boxes arrive, the faster that happens.
Whether you're moving across town or relocating to the South Bay, this checklist covers what to do in the weeks before the move so unpacking day goes smoothly. Save it, print it, or send it to whoever is moving with you.
4 to 6 Weeks Before the Move
Declutter room by room. Every item you don't pack is one you don't have to move, unpack or find a place for.
Donate, sell or recycle what isn't coming with you, and schedule any donation pickups early.
Measure your new home. Closets, pantry shelves, kitchen drawers and the garage. Photos and measurements now save a lot of guessing later.
Plan where the big furniture goes. A simple sketch of each room helps the movers place everything right the first time.
Start using up what's in your pantry and freezer.
2 to 3 Weeks Before
Pack the non-essentials first: seasonal clothes, books, decor and the guest room.
Label every box with the room and a short description. "Kitchen: baking pans and mixing bowls" is far more useful than "Kitchen."
Color-code by room. Use colored tape or stickers on the boxes, and put the same color on the door of each room in the new house.
Number your boxes and keep a simple list on your phone, so you know exactly what's in box 23.
Bag the hardware. Put screws and bolts from furniture in labeled zip bags and tape them to the piece they belong to.
The Week Before
Pack an "open first" box for each person: sheets, a towel, toiletries, chargers, medications and a change of clothes.
Pack a kitchen survival box: a few plates, cups and utensils, one pan, dish soap, paper towels and coffee.
Keep valuables with you. Important documents, jewelry and anything irreplaceable should travel in your car, not on the truck.
Clean the new home before the furniture arrives, if you can. Shelves, drawers and closets are much easier to wipe down when they're empty.
Set up utilities and internet so they're running on move-in day.
Moving Day
Have one person at the new home directing boxes to the right rooms.
Set up the beds first and make them before evening. A good night's sleep makes the next day much easier.
Don't try to unpack everything in one day. Open the "open first" boxes and stop there.
Unpacking Day: Where to Start
The order matters. This is the sequence that gets a household functioning fastest:
Kitchen. You'll use it every day, so it comes first.
Bathrooms. Quick to finish and needed right away.
Bedrooms. Beds, plus the clothes you'll wear this week.
Kids' rooms and play areas, so routines can start again.
Living areas.
Home office, garage and storage last.
Two tips that make a big difference:
Break down boxes as you go and keep one spot for packing paper and recycling. Piles of empty boxes slow everything down.
Decide where things live now, not later. It's much easier to set up a system in an empty cabinet than to reorganize a full one in six months.
